Lifeguard Shortage Impacting Traver Lakes
Posted on Jun 12th, 2019
A few residents have noted that the Traver Lakes pool has been closed at certain times.  We are working hard to remedy the situation, but are facing the same lifeguard shortage that every other pool in Michigan is facing this summer.

It is so bad now that Red Oaks Waterpark in Madison Heights, which on Thursday said it still needs another 19 lifeguards, is making contingency plans if it doesn’t have the minimum number required to fully operate before this Friday’s opening. Not even starting pay of $11.66 is enough to lure applicants. The average rate nationwide for lifeguards is about $9.50.

But even though Traver Lakes took steps early this year and raised its hourly rate to $15 an hour to entice potential life guards, we are still struggling to find enough help to keep our pool open.  We even pay for the cost of certification which can run $200 per qualified candidate.

With these incentives in place, we’ve had some success hiring, but we are still short at least 4 life guards.  Although we currently have 6 life guards on the payroll, we still can’t get all the shifts covered.  We are continuing our efforts to hire more life guards.

If any resident knows of any potential candidates please contact the property manager and he will follow up with the candidate.  Students, Retirees or anyone interested in swimming are welcome to apply.

This means that residents will be disappointed this year when they come to the pool and find it closed. We are trying to lock down the schedules so we can alert residents via the Traver Lakes website to the days the pool will be closed due to lack of life guard availability.

We suggest residents look at the Traver Lakes website front page to make sure the pool is open before journeying to the pool.
